An Omegle alternative for people who just want the next conversation

You didn’t use Omegle for the design. You used it because a few seconds later you were talking to someone you would never otherwise meet. Omigo Chat keeps that part. What changed is the stuff around the edges, from how you report someone to who is allowed in.

Who you might meet now

Omegle closed in November 2023. The habit didn’t.

Omegle ran from 2009 until November 8, 2023. When it shut, the homepage was replaced by a letter from its founder explaining that keeping the service safe from misuse had become too costly to continue. For about fourteen years it had been the default answer whenever someone asked where you could go to talk to a random person online, and for a lot of people it was the first place they ever spoke to someone in another country without a plan. Then it was gone. Overnight. The people who had used it every week did not stop wanting to meet a stranger for ten minutes after work; they just lost the one tab that had always been there for it, and most of them have been trying replacements one after another ever since.

That left a lot of people with a habit and nowhere to put it, and in the weeks after the shutdown search engines filled up with people typing some version of the same question, what replaced Omegle, where do I go now, is there anything like it that still works, often more than once a day. Some wanted to kill twenty minutes after work. Some were practising English or Spanish. Some were just bored. Some just liked the small surprise of not knowing who would appear. None of those reasons went away.

Dozens of sites now borrow the format. We wrote a separate comparison of seven of them, Omigo Chat included and labelled as ours, in the best Omegle alternatives for 2026. This page is narrower: it explains how Omigo Chat in particular handles the things Omegle users care about.

Then and now, row by row

Left column: how it worked on Omegle. Right column: how it works on Omigo Chat today. Some rows look almost identical, which is the point; where they differ, it is usually because something that was easy to ignore on Omegle, like who could be on the other end or how you got away from a bad chat, needed a firmer answer.

Your first five minutes on Omigo Chat

Here is what actually happens, step by step, so nothing on the screen catches you off guard. None of these steps takes long, but knowing them in advance means you spend your attention on the person who appears rather than on working out which button does what, which is where most first sessions quietly fall apart.

Five steps of a first session: tap start, allow the camera, say hi to a stranger, tap next, hang up
  1. 0:00

    You tap Start.

No email, no password, no profile picture. The site gives you a session in the background and takes you to the match screen.

  2. 0:05

Your browser asks for camera and microphone.

Say yes, or nothing can start. If you said no by accident, the page shows you how to switch it back on in your browser settings.

  3. 0:10

    Someone appears.

It is one person, on video, one-on-one. Say hi. Most good conversations start with something dull. And that is completely fine.

  4. 1:00

    You decide.

Keep talking, tap Next once it unlocks a few seconds in, or hang up. If anything was wrong, open their profile to report or block them.

  5. Later

    Maybe you message them.

If a chat went well, you can send a text message afterwards. If you want to keep your conversations, log in properly at that point.

What we deliberately left out

Copying Omegle feature for feature would have been easy, since most of what it did is well understood by now and plenty of sites have done exactly that, right down to the layout of the buttons and the wording on the start screen. We chose otherwise. Some of it we chose not to bring back. Each of these was a choice we made knowing it would cost us some visitors, and we would make the same choices again, because a smaller site that people trust tends to be a better place to talk than a bigger one they don’t.

No spy mode

Watching two strangers talk without them knowing who you are never sat well with us. Every chat here is between the two people in it.

No under-18s

Omegle allowed 13-year-olds with parental permission. Omigo Chat is for adults only. If you are under 18, please close this tab.

No group rooms

Not a moral stance. We just think one-on-one is where the good conversations happen, because in a group the loudest person sets the tone and everyone else waits for a gap, while two people on a call have to actually listen to each other, so that is all we do.

Coming over from text-only chat

A lot of Omegle regulars never turned the camera on. If that was you, the jump to video feels bigger than it is.

A text-only chat window turning into a friendly face-to-face video call

Try it on an evening when you have nowhere else to be, so that the first few calls feel like an experiment rather than a test you can fail. Keep the first chat short on purpose, say five minutes, and decide before you start that whatever happens in those five minutes counts as a success, because the only real goal of a first try is finding out that the format is less frightening than it looked from the outside. And give yourself permission to move on the moment you feel awkward. Nobody is keeping score. It also helps to remember that the person on the other side cannot see your nerves as clearly as you feel them, and that most people who open a random video chat are hoping, just like you, that the next face will be someone easy to talk to. Our talk to strangers page has openers and a few situations worth rehearsing.

Who this won’t suit

Honest answers save time. Better to say it here than have you find out after ten minutes. We would honestly rather lose you to a site that suits you than keep you on one that doesn’t, since someone who stays out of obligation tends to have flat conversations, and flat conversations are no fun for the person on the other end either.

  • You want to filter by interest, country or language. We don’t offer that.
  • You want a group chat with friends. Omigo Chat is one-on-one only.
  • You never want to see a paid feature. Longer calls and some other things here cost coins.
  • You are under 18. This site is not for you.

And that is fine. If one of those is a deal-breaker, the comparison of seven sites will point you somewhere better.

Omegle alternative questions

Is Omigo Chat the same as Omegle?
No. Omigo Chat is a separate, independent service with no connection to Omegle or its founder. It offers the same basic format: a random one-on-one video chat with a stranger, in the browser.
Why did Omegle shut down?
Omegle closed on November 8, 2023. In his closing statement the founder said the cost of fighting misuse of the service, financial and personal, had become too high to keep going.
Do I need an account to use Omigo Chat?
There is no sign-up form before your first match. If you later want to keep conversations or buy something, you can log in properly.
Does Omigo Chat have a text-only mode like Omegle?
Not as a separate random room. Matching is by video. You can send text messages to people you have already talked to.
Can I use Omigo Chat on my phone?
Yes. It runs in the mobile browser on iPhone and Android, so there is nothing to download, nothing to update and nothing sitting on your home screen afterwards unless you choose to add a shortcut to it yourself.
Is Omigo Chat free?
Matched calls begin with a free stretch. Before that stretch ends, the call shows the per-minute rate in coins, so you know what continuing would cost. Some other features are paid too.

One tap to someone new

That part we kept exactly as you remember it. Pick a quiet moment, open the tab, and let the first person who appears surprise you.
